Under the general direction of Chief Engineer I, this position performs a wide variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, air conditioning, ventilating, and other mechanical systems. The role involves instructing, leading, or supervising incarcerated people, planning, monitoring, scheduling, and performing maintenance on institutional heating and utility systems, and supervising incarcerated maintenance workers. Responsibilities include welding, fabricating, fitting, installing, repairing mechanical devices, and leading repair efforts with Stationary Engineer Apprentices and Maintenance Mechanics. The position also involves operating, maintaining, and repairing boilers, pumps, valves, and lines used in steam distribution, as well as refrigerant compressors and related equipment. After training and certification, the incumbent assists in abatement and repairs of asbestos-containing materials, plans work schedules, requisitions materials, reads schematics and blueprints, guides incarcerated work crews, and maintains work records. Administrative duties include adhering to policies, submitting requests, reporting time, and attending meetings and training.
San Quentin Rehab Center, California's oldest correctional institution, is located on 432 acres overlooking the bay, 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The facility includes multiple cell blocks, a maximum security Adjustment Center, health care building, and various security and support structures.
