Civil Engineering: Land Development - Grading Design Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY

Prepares preliminary and final maps, plans, drawings, exhibits, and digital data files using appropriate CAD drafting programs. The complexity of production will vary depending on the skill level of the designer/operator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Develop detailed grading plans and specifications to ensure proper drainage, slope stability, and site accessibility.
  2. Perform calculations to balance earthwork and minimize costs.
  3. Implement erosion and sediment control measures to protect the site during and after construction.
  4. Prepare street, sewer, water, storm drain, grading, and other engineering maps, exhibits, and drawings using basic design and engineering principles, as directed.
  5. Update drawings and CAD files as directed by project engineers and/or land development team management. Responsible for daily backup of CAD drawings.
  6. Work with standard CAD specifications, formats, and base files required by various private firms and government agencies. Adjust drawings to specific sale requirements.
  7. Prepare drawings in accordance with Agency and/or Hunsaker LA graphic standards.
  8. Maintain CAD files and databases for the land development group in accordance with Hunsaker LA CADD Standards.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Enhance knowledge and skills related to CAD technology to support the land development team.
  • Assist in providing support to CAD users, depending on level of expertise.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements include:

  • An Associate's Degree in CAD Technology or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Three to five years of experience in computer-aided drafting, preferably with a civil engineering or related firm.
  • Knowledge of CAD terminology, procedures, and processes; specialized training is desirable.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Basic mathematics skills and ability to perform calculations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience in civil land development, hydrology, storm drains, sewers, and earthwork.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work involves heavy keyboard activity and technical work requiring concentration on mathematical calculations. Must follow written and verbal directions.

RESPONSIBILITY AND SUPERVISION

The CAD designer reports to a project manager and may receive guidance from additional project managers or engineers. Higher knowledge levels may support CAD management and user support. Supervision varies with expertise; production progress is reviewed regularly.

PAY RANGE

$90,000 - $120,000 annually
