Summary
• Under the direction of the nurse manager and supervision of the professional nurse, provides supportive care to the Ambulatory Infusion Center and Cancer Resource Center by performing a variety of clerical and patient care duties.
Responsibilities
o Perform the following patient care duties for the infusion center under the direction of a registered nurse, identifies any deviations from norms and reports and documents findings in a timely and appropriate manner;
o Ambulation of patients, as necessary, to restroom, physician's office or patient's vehicle.
o Assessment of patient's/data collection, including vital signs - blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature (oral, axillary, rectal), pulse ox, CMS, height, weight, intake and output.
o Maintain and prepare chairs between patients and procedures.
o Greet and accompany patient to appropriate nursing area, provide patients with beverages.
o Phlebotomy: performs phlebotomies with minimum discomfort and accurate instruction to patient, collects the appropriate specimen and amount for ordered tests, correctly labels specimen, and accurately collects STATS or Timed tests.
o Specimen collection/handling, including respiratory secretions, throat culture, stool, and urine samples.
o Collect data related to health status by collecting, reporting, and recording basic objective and subjective data at the direction and under the supervision of RN.
o Provide supplemental oxygen by applying approved devices (nasal cannula, or simple oxygen mask)
o Telephone 911, and perform basic CPR during Code Blue while waiting for Emergency Services arrival.
o Assists and performs special tasks as requested by medical or nursing staff, including observation and isolation patient care, following established protocols.
o Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
o Pick up and deliver blood products from Blood Bank to the AIC after it is checked out by the RN over the telephone.
o Assists AIC Clerk with computer order entry, telephone reception and completion of daily pharmacy log in a timely manner.May assist with patient scheduling, obtaining insurance authorizations and medical record maintenance and all other clerical support duties as needed.Prioritize and maintain flow during busy times.Assists in obtaining, notifying nursing staff, highlighting returned labs and files lab reports.
o Demonstrates basic computer skills.
o Orders supplies as requested by nursing staff. Verifies accuracy of orders by matching items on delivery slip to items received. Orders dietary supplies as requested and verifies accuracy of deliveries.
o Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Required:
o High school diploma or equivalent.
o Must provide documentation of successful completion of a course or training in phlebotomy.
o Must qualify to apply for a Nevada certification as a Laboratory Assistant after 6 month of employment or have certification at hire.
o Minimum one (1) year previous experience as a medical assistant, two years preferred. Experience in acute care may be substituted.
o Current BLS certification.
Preferred:
o Previous experience with specimen processing.
