Join to apply for the Sheriff's Correctional Deputy - Lateral role at County of Santa Clara.

Under supervision, to maintain order and security of inmates within the Sheriff's Office Correctional facility, transport inmates, and supervise inmate work projects throughout the County.

The Sheriff's Correctional Deputy has peace officer status while assigned to a detention facility, extending throughout California when engaged in duties described in Penal Code Section 830.1(c).

This lateral position is for applicants who currently work or recently worked in California Corrections and wish to transfer to Santa Clara County Corrections.

Applicants must attach necessary certificates including the California Standards and Training for Corrections (STC), PC 832 Firearms and Arrest certification, and First Aid/CPR certifications; applications missing these will be rejected.

Effective January 1, 2023, peace officers are no longer required to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, but must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

The agility test is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 26, 2025.

Typical Tasks

  • Supervise inmate conduct and activities
  • Maintain security and conduct counts
  • Supervise inmate work programs
  • Inspect quarters and conduct searches
  • Book and release inmates, and orient new inmates
  • Manage visitor access and report incidents
  • Transport inmates and respond to emergencies
  • Prepare reports and conduct investigations
  • Participate in community and honor guard activities
  • Provide training and testify in court as needed

Employment Standards

High school diploma or equivalent required. Must possess current STC, Firearms, and CPR certifications. Must be at least 21 years old, with a valid California driver's license, and meet physical and medical standards. Disqualifications include felony convictions and certain misdemeanors. Must pass background, psychological, and medical evaluations.

Knowledge Of

  • Legal and procedural laws related to detention and corrections
  • Investigation techniques and communication skills
  • Computer systems and safety protocols

Ability To

  • Control and instruct inmates
  • Prepare reports and communicate effectively
  • Handle stressful situations and physical tasks
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism

Physical Requirements

  • Work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays
