Job Description

Gilead's mission is to discover, develop, and deliver therapies that improve lives worldwide, especially for patients with life-threatening illnesses.

The Inflammation Department seeks an experienced scientist to lead as Sr. Director, Inflammation. The role involves building and leading a team focused on discovering and developing therapies for autoimmune diseases, including inflammatory bowel diseases, atopic/allergic diseases, rheumatological conditions, and other inflammatory disorders. The primary focus will be on eliminating pathogenic cells and promoting immune tolerance using both traditional and novel modalities such as cell therapy and lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technologies.

The successful candidate will lead discovery and translational research programs to identify and characterize novel targets and pathways, advancing innovative therapies toward clinical evaluation.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead a team of scientists in autoimmune disease research, target identification, and drug candidate development using advanced technologies and models.
• Collaborate across departments and with external partners to develop therapeutic strategies and discovery platforms.
• Evaluate external opportunities in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases as part of a cross-functional team.
• Build and mentor a high-performing, scientifically deep team.
• Contribute to intellectual property, publications, and conference presentations.

Basic Qualifications

• Doctorate with 12+ years of scientific research experience, or
• Master's with 12+ years, or
• Bachelor's with 14+ years of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. with postdoctoral training and 15+ years in immunology or autoimmune diseases.
• Over 10 years of leadership or independent research experience; industry experience preferred.
• Proven scientific excellence with impactful publications or therapeutic programs.
• Self-motivated, collaborative, results-driven in a dynamic environment.
• Deep expertise in immunology, autoimmune diseases, and modalities like cell therapy or LNPs, supported by high-impact publications or therapy development success.
• Broad understanding of drug discovery for small molecules/biologics; regulatory experience and cell therapy knowledge are assets.
• Proven leadership managing multiple projects or teams; experience with external collaborations is a plus.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

The salary range is $261,375 - $338,250, with additional benefits such as bonuses, stock incentives, paid time off, and health insurance. Benefits details:
